Diffusers 101

What Everyone Should Know About DIFFUSERS

Diffusion is one of the best applications when it comes to using essential oils. How do you tell which of the hundred diffusers available is the one you want. We want to help you see some of the options and look at the pros and cons to different types of diffusers. Remember that when you are diffusing essential oils your objective is to get those tiny aromatic molecules up into the air so that you can breathe them in and get them into your sinuses, throat and lungs to aid your body. Cost is always a factor, but you also want to consider the benefits when making your decision. Diffusion is the safest way to use essential oils and is one of the most effective uses of your oils.

One of the easiest ways to diffuse the oils that has no cost is simply placing a few drops in the palm of your hand and rubbing your hands together. Once you do this, cup your hands over your nose and breath in through your nose. Take your hands away after inhaling and close them so the oils stay and exhale through your mouth. Continue this process until the oil is gone. This application is best for occasional use or for emergency relief of respiratory constriction and allergies. If you have ever done this you know that very quickly the smell will change and go away quickly. This is because your hands are also absorbing the oils. The main drawback to this method of inhalation is that you will have to continue to reapply the oil to your hands and repeat to get enough into your system and you would have to use too much straight oil on your skin, not recommended.

The next applicator you want to consider is a cotton ball. Placing one to two drops on a cotton ball allows you to get those molecules into your system. Being on the cotton ball allows the oils to stay there and not be absorbed into your hands. Keeping the cotton ball in a zip lock bag allows you to continue to breathe off the cotton ball throughout the day as needed. A good application would be to breathe deeply for 5-10 minutes or until your body says to stop (listen to your body, it will let you know that you have had enough). The cotton ball will hold the oils enough to be effective for one day if you follow this application. This is very economical and easy to do.

Another applicator using this same concept is aromatherapy jewelry. You place a drop or two of oil on the aroma ball and enjoy the oil throughout the day. It will last a day giving you the benefits of the oil. Some companies have used this same concept of placing a pad in a cover that can be placed in your car or other convenient locations. These can all be economical and extremely useful. The amount of oil you get throughout the day will be relatively small. This is very helpful with oils that are being used to aid emotions. You will need more if you are treating illness.

The next jump up in diffusers would be very common models that combine water with your oils to get them into the air. Some of these are very beautiful in their design and features. These can be very quiet and you can see the vapor coming out. Remember that most of that vapor is water with a hint of oils. This is very cost effective and can give a room a nice hint of the oils you are using. Consider when using this type of diffuser that when you combine water and oil they do not combine, they repel. They do interact with each other and they are deteriorating your essential oil exponentially. If you are using this type you will likely need to rinse out  the diffuser at the end of each day. This type is again great to get constant small doses assisting with emotions, but these types of diffusers don’t put out enough oil to really be beneficial when you have an illness.

The last diffuser type would be a nebulizing diffuser. This type of diffuser does not combine the essential oils with water, but instead uses the essential oils straight. It has a motor that pulls the oil up and throws it into the air in a very fine mist without ever heating the oils. Consider what we said in the beginning that our objective is to get those tiny molecules up into the air. This method is the best when dealing with illness because of its ability to get more essential oils into the air where you can breathe them into your lungs. Those molecules are released into the air and are then able to be inhaled directly into the respiratory system. These diffusers often have timers of run and rest options and you can control the output. Many have expressed concern that you will “burn through your oils”. Yes if you just let it run it will waste oil. We would suggest sitting with the diffuser in very close proximity to you and breathing deeply for 5-10 minutes or until your body says you have had enough. Then turn the machine off until the next application. When you have an illness, doing this three to five times a day is incredibly beneficial, and little oil is wasted with this method. Because it is throwing straight essential oil into the air you can very quickly smell the strong smell of the oil in a larger area. This is the best diffuser when trying to “clean and disinfect” the air and room with oils. The drawback of this type is the motor has a soft humming sound and they are more expensive than all the other styles.

Please consider what you are trying to accomplish when diffusing. When you realize what you are trying to do the type of diffuser should become very evident. A caution is that any diffuser that “heats” the oil to get the molecules out need to be avoided because it deteriorates and alters the oil.

10 Reasons Why You Should Have A High-Quality Nebulizing Diffuser In Your Home

1. Relaxation, Stress Relief, and Sleep

One of the best and most well-known uses for essential oils is their ability to help you unwind at the end of a hard day. While there are several other methods for getting your soothing oils from the bottle into your blood stream where they start to work their magic, the diffuser is by far the easiest and longest-lasting of them all. Keep one at the office to help you relax on your lunch break. Have a diffuser ready to go with the push of a button when you get home from work in the evening. Set one on the bedside table to help your mind and body relax so you can sleep better at night.

2. Elevating and Uplifting

Just as a diffuser can help you to de-stress, they can also be used to create an energizing uplifting, elevated mood. This is not only great for when you’re feeling sad or depressed. You can use your diffuser to inspire high spirits during the holidays, to set a positive atmosphere for business meetings and social gatherings, to help you get moving on a slow morning, or even to create a romantic atmosphere for that special someone in your life.

3. Annihilate Illness

Using a diffuser in your home or office is a great way to keep cold, flu, and other nasty illnesses at bay. Many essential oils are powerfully anti-viral and anti-microbial and when introduced into the air in micro-vapor form, the organic compounds within the oils come into direct contact with airborne pathogens before they can invade your body. Essential oils can also be used to boost and support the immune system.

4. Breathe Easier

Essential oils are great for reducing inflammation and congestion in clogged airways to help you breathe more easily. If you are prone to allergies or other breathing disorders, try diffusing essential oils in the room (or rooms) of your home where you spend the most time. Just remember to keep a box of tissues handy as your nose and sinuses begin to open so you can also avoid that mad dash to the bathroom!

5. Pain Relief

While most people will tell you to apply essential oils directly to the body for pain relief, you can also use a diffuser to extend their effects. This method is an excellent way to combat persistent pain such as that caused by headaches, sore joints, and overworked muscles.

6. Improve Healthy Brain Function

Using essential oils in a diffuser is a highly-effective way to super-charge your brain cells. This effect works on multiple levels. First, many essential oils have adaptogenic qualities – meaning that they are soothing when you’re stressed, but they can also give you a pick-me-up when you’re feeling down or sluggish. By leveling out your mood, the oils in the air will help you to focus. Also, there are several essential oils which are known for their powerful ability to balance the body’s hormones. With regular use, these oils can actually help to heal the underlying causes responsible for hampering cognitive function.

7. Safer Alternative to Candles, Incense, and Synthetic Plug-Ins

If you have pets or small children, burning candles or incense can be a potentially hazardous practice. Plug-In air fresheners introduce dangerous and highly toxic synthetic chemicals into the room which mess with your body’s normal  functions! You definitely don’t want those synthetic, toxic chemicals or their harmful effects. With an essential oil diffuser, you can reap the healing holistic benefits of aromatherapy with no worries of toxins – when you diffuse Purify’s USDA certified organic essential oils.

8. Repel Insects and Rodents

Whether your problem is mosquitoes, house flies, fruit flies or moths, you can use essential oils in your diffuser to deter these critters from entering your home. Rodents aren’t fond of essential oils either…especially peppermint.

9. Keeps You Cool

(While it might make you appear more eco-savvy to your friends and family, that’s not the kind of ‘cool’ we’re referring to.)

In the heat of the summer months, running the air conditioner all day and all night is a surefire way to send your electric bill through the roof. Instead, try diffusing your favorite crisp, cooling minty essential oils in the rooms where you spend the most time to help you beat the heat.

10. Saves Money

So far we’ve covered the top nine reasons that owning a diffuser is an investment in your health and well-being, but it’s more than just that. With all of the versatile uses for essential oil diffusers around the home which ultimately lead to less doctor visits, lower electric bills, fewer cups of coffee, and better productivity; you will soon discover that this handy little device is a money-saver as well!
