Beware of Greenwashing

What is Greenwashing?

Green-wash (green’wash’, -wôsh’) – verb: the act of misleading consumers regarding the environmental practices of a company or the environmental benefits of a product or service.

Greenwashing is when companies claim to be "all natural" or "organic" when they really are not. They do this to make you feel confident in their products and purchase them, giving their company money. There are more products claiming to be green on the shelves of stores today and 95% of them either include harmful chemicals or are manufactured in a way that they really aren't good for the environment like they claim.

Avoid falling for false green claims by reading the labels. The following are ingredients that you really want to avoid:
  • Parabens -  (Or anything ending in -paraben, ie: methylparaben) Parabens are a synthetic chemical that mimics estrogen in the body. Parabens used topically on the skin bind with the estrogen receptor sites in the dermis. Once they are on the skin, they are difficult to remove and cause hormone issues; estrogen dominance, extreme mood swings and difficulty reproducing.
  • Phalates - Phalates are used with synthetic fragrances. They are an extremely toxic chemical group and can quickly cause sterilization, especially in men.
  • Propolene Glycol - Propolene Glycol is antifreeze and is found in most topical skin care products and in some foods like salad dressings and ice cream. It is used as a preservative and is toxic and harmful to the body.
  • Petroleum Products - Petroleum products are highly processed, synthetic chemicals that cause all kinds of skin issues. You don't want these on your skin.
  • Waxes - Like E-wax and Panthenol (synthetic pro vitamin B5) - These waxes coat your skin, clogging the pores and harm the normal function of your skin.
  • Anything with a number in it - for example: 1-4 doxane. Numbers in skin care ingredients rarely denote natural, healthy ingredients.
  • Ingredients that are initials - for example: PEG-100. The initials stand for a synthetic chemical that is too long for them to type out on the label. Stay away from these synthetic, toxic ingredients that harm your healthy skin!
